LCM Calculator
Find the Least Common Multiple of two numbers.
Least Common Multiple — Fast Methods
The naive way — listing multiples — works for small numbers but explodes for larger ones (lcm of 197 and 611 by listing means checking hundreds of multiples). The GCD shortcut is instant: divide the product by the GCD.
LCM is the common denominator you actually want when adding fractions (smaller than the product), the beat frequency of two pulse trains, and the reunion time of two buses/planets on different cycles.
Worked Example: lcm(12, 18)
gcd(12, 18): 18 mod 12 = 6; 12 mod 6 = 0 → gcd = 6
lcm = (12 × 18) ÷ 6 = 216 ÷ 6 = 36
Check: 36 = 12 × 3 = 18 × 2 — the first shared multiple ✓
Adding 1/12 + 1/18: LCD 36 → 3/36 + 2/36 = 5/36
For three numbers (4, 6, 9): lcm(4,6)=12, then lcm(12,9)=36 — always fold pairwise, never multiply all and divide twice.
Frequently Asked Questions
When is lcm just a × b?
Exactly when gcd(a,b) = 1 (coprime): no shared factors means the first common multiple is the product. E.g., lcm(8, 15) = 120.
How does LCM help add fractions?
The LCD (least common denominator) IS the lcm of the denominators. Using lcm keeps numbers small: 1/6 + 1/8 → LCD 24 (not 48), giving 7/24 directly without heavy simplifying.
What about LCM of decimals or times?
Clear decimals by scaling (0.6 and 0.8 → 6 and 8 → lcm 24 → 2.4). For cycles like 'every 12 min and every 15 min', lcm(12,15)=60 — they align every hour.
Is lcm ever smaller than both numbers?
No — the lcm of positive integers is always ≥ the larger number. If you get smaller, check the gcd division. (lcm is a multiple of EACH input, so it can't shrink below any of them.)

How it works
The Least Common Multiple (LCM) of two integers is the smallest positive integer that is perfectly divisible by both numbers.
It can be calculated using the Greatest Common Divisor (GCD):
LCM(a,b) = (|a × b|) / GCD(a,b)
